The Republican-led House Budget bill passed in August makes $5 billion in cuts to essential services, including a $4 billion cut to DHHS (mainly Medicaid and Behavioral Health), $1.4 billion in cuts to education, a $200 million cut to Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, and a $94.7 million cut to Public Safety. A key “selling point” for pushing these cuts through is an increase in funding for roads.
This bill now goes back to the Senate for negotiations. If an agreement isn’t reached by Oct 1, we face a state government shutdown, which will be blamed on the Democrats for not agreeing to these horrendous cuts.
Indivisible Paw Paw is launching a letter writing and phone campaign to let the negotiators know that we are against these drastic cuts. We are providing editable templates for 4 key areas of the cuts: Health and Human services, Education, Environment, Great Lakes and Energy, and Public Safety.
These templates have the gist of the cuts and some data. Choose the template that you feel most passionate about, or use more than one if you are ambitious. The most effective letters and phone calls are those with some personalization, so please add a paragraph to your template introducing yourself, and make any other changes as you see fit.
Email Campaign: After reviewing the Email template, highlight and copy it to your clipboard i.e. [Crtl + C].
Phone Campaign: Select the phone template that you will use during your call.
Health and Human Services
Don't let them dismantle healthcare for Michigan families. Federal Medicaid cuts will strain our state budget, and Republican plans for additional cuts would be devastating. Thousands of Michigan families depend on Medicaid for essential services. Let's stop them from playing political games with our health and finances.
Education
Once an above average standout in academic achievement, our state has fallen below average in recent years. This decline in test scores represents more than statistics—it represents missed opportunities for our children and families who are counting on a strong education system to secure their futures.
Environment, Great Lakes and Energy
To Republicans, "Pure Michigan" is just a slogan. They'd rather turn our state into a "GOP"—Grimy, Oily Peninsula. Our clean air, safe drinking water, and pristine parks aren't negotiable. Michigan families deserve environmental protection, not corporate pollution.
Public Safety
Trump supporters claim crime is "out of control" in our cities, yet their proposed state budget slashes funding for public safety. You can't fear-monger about crime while cutting the very programs that keep our communities safe. Their rhetoric doesn't match their priorities. Let state negotiators know that public safety is a priority for Michigan families.
